When carrying out any construction that affects the ridge line of a property – the point where the roof peaks – an existing chimney will need to be raised so it’s situated above the ridge. Our building contractors will ensure this is done as per regulations.
Common in semi-detached properties, this form of loft conversion focuses on the smaller slope of the roof, known as the hip. This section is extended vertically, and the ridge expanded out to meet it. Hip-to-gable conversions maximise head height.
Named for a 17th-century French architect, a mansard conversion maximises the available space in your attic by changing the layout of one side of the roof entirely. The slope is brought back to an angle of approximately 70 degrees with a flat roof meeting the remaining part of the roof at the ridge. Internally, one side of the new space will resemble a standard room’s shape. Dormer windows are inserted into the new walls, and skylights may be added to the flat roof.
A simple restructure of the roofing joists will offer a quick solution if you desperately need more room in your home. By increasing the supports along the side of the roof – thus providing storage behind them – these new ‘walls’ become the shoulders of the roof. In an older property, an original support beam can become a feature within the new attic conversion. The installation of Velux windows provides natural daylight and brightness, offering you a wide variety of options when deciding how to utilise your new space.
